Honda Civic Type R import guide

EK9 · B16B VTEC · the original Type R hot hatch

The Honda Civic Type R started as a JDM-only legend: the EK9, with a hand-assembled, high-compression B16B VTEC that revved past 8,000 rpm. Lightweight, stripped-back, and focused, the original Type R hatch is now import-eligible. We source Civic Type Rs direct from Japan.

Overview

Why import a Honda Civic Type R

The EK9 Civic Type R is where the Type R hatch legend began — and it was never sold new in the U.S. Honda hand-assembled its B16B, raised compression, added a close-ratio gearbox and a helical limited-slip diff, and stripped weight for a razor-sharp, high-revving driver's car.

Because the EK9 was JDM-only, importing from Japan is the only way to get the genuine article — and it's now past the 25-year threshold.

  • Hand-built, high-compression B16B VTEC
  • Close-ratio 5-speed and helical LSD
  • Lightweight, focused, JDM-only EK9
  • Foundational to the entire Type R lineage

Chassis

EK9, EP3 & FD2 explained

The EK9 (1997–2000) is the original hatch and is import-eligible now. The EP3 (2001–2005) moved to the 2.0L K20A and is becoming eligible year by year. The FD2 (2007–2010) is a later four-door Type R and remains a future import.

  • EK9 — 1997–2000, B16B, the original, eligible now
  • EP3 — 2001–05, K20A hatch, rolling into eligibility
  • FD2 — 2007–10, K20A sedan, a future import
  • Recaros, red badge, and Championship White paint

Buyer notes

What to look for at auction

  • Verify a genuine Type R (chassis code, VIN) vs a replica
  • B16B compression, VTEC engagement, and service history
  • Evidence of hard track use or accident repair
  • Rust on arches and floors; originality of interior Recaros
  • Auction grade — clean, unmodified EK9s command premiums

Importing

Importing a Civic Type R to the U.S.

The EK9 is eligible now; the EP3 becomes eligible on the anniversary of its build date. We verify eligibility before purchase so you only land a legal car.

Under the U.S. 25-year rule, a vehicle is exempt from FMVSS once it is at least 25 years old. Eligibility is rolling — each model year becomes importable on the anniversary of its build date.

FAQ

Honda Civic Type R import — common questions

Was the EK9 Civic Type R sold in the U.S.?
No — the EK9 was a JDM-only model. Importing from Japan under the 25-year rule is the only way to own a genuine one in the U.S.
Is the Civic Type R legal to import?
The EK9 (1997–2000) is eligible now. The EP3 (2001–2005) is becoming eligible year by year; the later FD2 is still a future import.
What engine is in the EK9 Type R?
A hand-assembled 1.6L B16B VTEC with raised compression and a high redline — one of the great naturally aspirated Honda fours.
How is the Type R different from a regular Civic?
Beyond the engine, the Type R adds a close-ratio gearbox, a helical limited-slip differential, chassis stiffening, weight reduction, Recaro seats, and unique trim — a purpose-built driver's car.
Is a Honda Civic Type R street-legal in the U.S.?
Once 25+ years old and federally cleared, yes. As a passenger car, registration is generally straightforward — confirm your state's emissions and titling rules.

Import eligibility and state registration rules change over time and vary by vehicle. Confirm current requirements before purchasing. This page is informational only and not legal advice.
