Overview

Why import a Nissan Caravan

The Caravan goes head-to-head with the Toyota HiAce and shares its core appeal: a roomy, durable body, economical diesel options, and available four-wheel drive. Because it lives in the HiAce's shadow, a clean Caravan often costs less for similar capability.

Its square body and flat floor make it a strong camper-conversion base, while work-spec versions are dependable cargo haulers.

  • Direct alternative to the Toyota HiAce, often better value
  • Turbo-diesel and 4WD configurations
  • Spacious, conversion-friendly body
  • Long production run means good supply

Generations

Caravan generations & variants

The E24 (1986–2001) is the classic import generation, progressively eligible by year and a popular conversion base. The E25 (2001–2012) is newer, with only its earliest years approaching eligibility.

  • E24 — 1986–2001, the classic import Caravan
  • E25 — 2001–2012, modern body
  • Urvan / Homy — badge variants of the same van
  • Diesel and 4WD work and passenger trims

Buyer notes

What to look for at auction

  • Rust on the floor pan, sills, and rear quarters
  • Diesel engine smoke, turbo, and timing-belt history
  • 4WD operation where fitted
  • Interior trim grade and seating configuration
  • Auction grade and accident/repair history

Importing

Importing a Caravan to the U.S.

Under the U.S. 25-year rule, a vehicle is exempt from FMVSS once it is at least 25 years old. Eligibility is rolling — each model year becomes importable on the anniversary of its build date.

As a full-size van, the Caravan is generally simpler to register than a kei vehicle once it's 25+ years old and federally cleared — but confirm your state's titling and emissions requirements.

FAQ

Nissan Caravan import — common questions

Nissan Caravan vs Toyota HiAce — which should I import?
Both are durable, practical JDM vans with diesel and 4WD options. The HiAce has the bigger reputation and aftermarket; the Caravan often costs less for comparable capability. Choose based on the specific van's condition and price.
Does the Nissan Caravan come with a diesel engine?
Yes. JDM Caravans were offered with economical turbo-diesel engines as well as petrol units, with diesel 4WD examples being especially desirable for adventure builds.
Is the Nissan Caravan good for camper conversions?
Yes. Its square body and flat floor make it a capable conversion base, similar to the HiAce, and often at a lower entry price.
Is a Nissan Caravan street-legal in the U.S.?
Caravans 25+ years old import legally under the federal age exemption. As a full-size van, registration is typically more straightforward than for kei vehicles — confirm your state's rules.
What is the Nissan Urvan or Homy?
Urvan and Homy are badge variants of the Caravan sold in different markets and configurations. Mechanically they're the same durable van.

Import eligibility and state registration rules change over time and vary by vehicle. Confirm current requirements before purchasing. This page is informational only and not legal advice.
