Importing
Importing a HiAce to the U.S.
Under the U.S. 25-year rule, a vehicle is exempt from FMVSS once it is at least 25 years old. Eligibility is rolling — each model year becomes importable on the anniversary of its build date.
Because the HiAce is a full-size van rather than a kei vehicle, its state registration is generally more straightforward than a kei truck's once it's 25+ years old and federally cleared — but always confirm local titling and emissions rules.

FAQ
Toyota HiAce import — common questions
- Is the Toyota HiAce good for a camper conversion?
- Excellent. Its tall, square body maximizes usable interior space, and the durable mechanicals are ideal for a vehicle you'll live out of. The H100 generation is the most popular conversion base.
- Does the Toyota HiAce come with a diesel engine?
- Yes. JDM HiAce vans were offered with economical turbo-diesel engines (and petrol options), many of which were never sold in the U.S. Diesel 4WD examples are especially desirable.
- Is the Toyota HiAce 4WD available?
- Yes, factory 4WD HiAce vans exist and are sought-after for adventure and camper builds. Confirm the drivetrain on the auction sheet before bidding.
- Is a Toyota HiAce street-legal in the U.S.?
- HiAce vans 25+ years old import legally under the federal age exemption. As a full-size van, registration is usually more straightforward than for kei vehicles, but confirm your state's titling and emissions rules.
- What's the difference between Super GL and Grand Cabin?
- Super GL is a premium cargo/crew van trim with upgraded interior appointments, while Grand Cabin is a high-roof, passenger-focused configuration with more seating and headroom.
