Overview
Why import a Suzuki Jimny
The Jimny punches absurdly above its size. A proper ladder frame, solid axles, and a low-range transfer case give it real off-road ability, while its tiny footprint lets it thread trails and squeeze into spaces a full-size 4x4 never could. The kei versions add a turbocharged 660cc engine for zippy in-town manners.
Japan is where the kei-class Jimnys were sold, making it the source for the turbo JA and JB cars enthusiasts want.
- Genuine body-on-frame, low-range 4x4
- Turbocharged 660cc kei engine
- Tiny footprint for tight trails and parking
- Strong aftermarket and cult following

JA11, JA12/JA22 & JB23 explained
The JA11 (1990–1995) and JA12/JA22 (1995–1998) are the classic leaf- and coil-sprung kei Jimnys, fully import-eligible and beloved for their simplicity. The JB23 (1998–2018) modernized the platform with coil suspension and is becoming eligible year by year.
- JA11 — 1990–95, leaf-sprung, turbo F6A, fully eligible
- JA12 / JA22 — 1995–98, coil-sprung, refined, eligible
- JB23 — 1998–2018, modern kei Jimny, rolling in
- Sierra — the wide-body 1.3L export-engine variant

Importing
Importing a Jimny to the U.S.
Under the U.S. 25-year rule, a vehicle is exempt from FMVSS once it is at least 25 years old. Eligibility is rolling — each model year becomes importable on the anniversary of its build date.
As a kei-class vehicle, on-road registration depends on your state — some title kei 4x4s for the street, others restrict them. Check your state's rules before you buy.

FAQ
Suzuki Jimny import — common questions
- Is the Suzuki Jimny actually good off-road?
- Yes — surprisingly so. Its ladder frame, solid axles, low-range transfer case, and light weight give it real capability, and the small size lets it go where bigger SUVs can't fit.
- Which Suzuki Jimny can I import?
- The JA11 and JA12/JA22 (1990–1998) are fully eligible now. The JB23 (1998–2018) becomes eligible on each car's 25th build-date anniversary — we confirm the build month before purchase.
- Is the JDM Jimny a kei car?
- The Japan-market Jimny (JA/JB) is kei-class with a 660cc engine. The wider Jimny Sierra uses a larger 1.3L engine and isn't kei-class. Most imports enthusiasts want are the kei turbo versions.
- Does the Jimny have a turbo?
- The kei-class Jimnys use a turbocharged 660cc engine (F6A, later K6A), which gives the little 4x4 enough punch for town and trail. The Sierra's 1.3L is naturally aspirated.
- Is a Suzuki Jimny street-legal in the U.S.?
- Eligible Jimnys import legally under the federal 25-year exemption. As a kei-class vehicle, on-road registration depends on your state — see our state import guides.
Import eligibility and state registration rules change over time and vary by vehicle. Confirm current requirements before purchasing. This page is informational only and not legal advice.
