Overview

Why import a Toyota MR2

The MR2 packages exotic mid-engine layout into an affordable, reliable Toyota. The first-gen AW11 is a light, sharp, 4A-GE-powered wedge; the second-gen SW20 grew into a mini-supercar with the turbocharged 3S-GTE; and the MR-S closed the line as a pure open-top roadster.

Japan-market cars offer the desirable turbo SW20 trims and clean, well-maintained examples across all three generations.

  • Genuine mid-engine, rear-drive layout
  • Turbo 3S-GTE in the SW20 GT
  • Three distinct, characterful generations
  • Affordable route into mid-engine ownership

Chassis

AW11, SW20 & MR-S explained

The AW11 (1984–1989) and SW20 (1989–1999) are fully or largely import-eligible — the SW20 turbo is the performance pick. The ZZW30 MR-S (1999–2007) is a lightweight NA roadster becoming eligible model year by model year.

  • AW11 — 1984–89, the 4A-GE wedge, fully eligible
  • SW20 — 1989–99, mini-supercar looks, turbo 3S-GTE
  • MR-S (ZZW30) — 1999–2007 roadster, rolling in
  • Turbo SW20 'GT' trims are the most sought-after

Buyer notes

What to look for at auction

  • Confirm turbo (3S-GTE) vs NA trim on SW20s
  • Engine and turbo health; quality of prior tuning
  • Rust on rockers, floors, and engine-bay areas
  • Accident history and chassis straightness (auction sheet)
  • Roof/T-bar seal condition where fitted

Importing

Importing an MR2 to the U.S.

AW11 and SW20 MR2s are eligible now; the MR-S becomes eligible on the anniversary of its build date. We verify eligibility before purchase.

Under the U.S. 25-year rule, a vehicle is exempt from FMVSS once it is at least 25 years old. Eligibility is rolling — each model year becomes importable on the anniversary of its build date.

FAQ

Toyota MR2 import — common questions

Is the Toyota MR2 mid-engine?
Yes — all three generations place the engine behind the seats, driving the rear wheels. It's one of the most affordable ways into genuine mid-engine ownership.
Which MR2 has the turbo engine?
The second-generation SW20 offered the turbocharged 3S-GTE in its GT trims. The AW11 uses the naturally aspirated (and supercharged, on some) 4A-GE, and the MR-S is naturally aspirated.
Is the SW20 MR2 legal to import?
Yes — SW20s (1989–1999) are eligible now. The AW11 is also fully eligible; only the later MR-S is still rolling into eligibility year by year.
MR2 vs AE86 — which is more fun?
Different flavors: the AE86 is a front-engine, rear-drive classic; the MR2 is mid-engine. Both are light and communicative. The SW20 turbo adds real pace the AE86 doesn't have.
Is a Toyota MR2 street-legal in the U.S.?
Once 25+ years old and federally cleared, yes. As a passenger sports car, registration is generally straightforward — confirm your state's rules.

Import eligibility and state registration rules change over time and vary by vehicle. Confirm current requirements before purchasing. This page is informational only and not legal advice.
